Overleaf
The University of Bayreuth provides a central Overleaf Professional subscription for academic staff and all students. To make this possible, the University has entered into a campus-wide agreement with Overleaf. The current contract term runs for three years starting on 1 September 2027.
Access is available via:
The Scientific Writing and Publishing Platform Overleaf
Overleaf is a browser-based platform for creating, editing, and collaborating on LaTeX documents. It is particularly well suited for scientific publications, theses, project reports, and technical documentation. As a fully web-based service, Overleaf can be used on almost any device without requiring local software installation.
- Real-time collaboration:
Multiple users can work on the same document simultaneously, leave comments, and track changes instantly. - Version control:
Previous document versions can be restored at any time, ensuring a transparent and traceable project history. - Designed for academic writing:
Comprehensive support for mathematical formulas, tables, figures, bibliographies, and citation styles. - Extensive template library:
A wide range of templates is available for journal articles, theses, conference papers, posters, and other academic documents. - Platform independence:
Accessible through all major web browsers, regardless of operating system.
The campus agreement is available to all members of the University of Bayreuth:
The service may only be used for purposes related to study, teaching, and research. Commercial use or use in connection with external contract work is not permitted.
Product: Overleaf Professional (browser-based application)
Each user is provided with their own personal license. Account sharing or the shared use of a license by multiple individuals is not permitted.
Contract Period: 1 September 2027 to 31 August 2030
Activation of the campus license is carried out through the University of Bayreuth's Single Sign-On (SSO) service:
After visiting the sign-in page, users will be redirected to the University's central authentication service. Once authentication has been completed successfully, eligibility is verified automatically and either an existing Overleaf account will be linked to the campus license or a new account will be created.
Overleaf can then be used directly through a web browser. No local software installation is required.
The University of Bayreuth / IT Service Centre has no access to personal Overleaf accounts! If the link between an account and the campus license is removed, the Overleaf account itself will generally remain active. Account management and deletion must be requested directly through Overleaf.
- The software may only be used by members of the University of Bayreuth.
- Use is restricted to study, teaching, and research activities.
- Licenses may not be transferred or shared with third parties.
- Licenses are assigned to individual users and are non-transferable.
- Eligibility for the campus license ends when a user leaves the University of Bayreuth.
- The license and usage terms of Overleaf additionally apply.
The following conditions apply to the use of Overleaf at the University of Bayreuth:
- First and last name
- University email address
- Affiliation with the University of Bayreuth
An Overleaf account is only created or linked after users have provided their consent during the registration process. Registration may be cancelled at any point before completion.
As Overleaf is a cloud service, only content that may legally and appropriately be stored and processed on external systems should be uploaded. Users are responsible for complying with the University of Bayreuth's policies regarding the handling of personal, confidential, or otherwise sensitive information.
Further information about privacy, data processing, and Overleaf's terms of service can be found directly from the provider:
Overleaf provides extensive resources for both new and experienced LaTeX users. A wide range of tutorials, templates, and help pages is available directly within the platform.
