Introducing - Dr. Hans-Jörg Bauer

The new head of the IT Service Center

Dr. Hans-Jörg Bauer has been at the helm of the IT Service Center (ITS) since 1 January 2024. His career speaks for itself: it all began with a degree in mathematics at the Technical University of Munich. From there, his career took him to Bonn, Cologne and finally Wuppertal, where he was Head of the Center for Information and Media Processing.

The staff at ITS welcome his choice. He is an enrichment for the University of Bayreuth, not only professionally but also personally. We are convinced that, with his open and committed manner, he will give a positive impetus to the projects that lie ahead in the coming years.

Dr. Hans-Jörg Bauer - Leiter des ITS an der Universität Bayreuth

Although we have already learned a bit about him from the "News from Campus" newsletter, we still have a few questions that are of burning interest to us:

What projects are planned in the near future?

Major equipment applications are a particularly important instrument for raising the necessary investment in IT infrastructure. Several are currently being assessed, drafted or prepared. In the area of research data management, which we are working on with the University Library, ZUV and in cooperation with the research departments, important further developments are also on the agenda. Other important topics include improvements in the WLAN area, upgrades to the media equipment in teaching rooms, the digitalization of various processes, involvement in the commissioning of the FZA building and changes to content management. But the list could be extended even further.

What was your first impression so far?

In the first two months, I have already had many good contacts at UBT. I feel very welcome at the university and at ITS and have received a lot of support from everyone. I am also dependent on this, because getting to know the university and IT operations is no small matter. My impression is that there is a really good spirit on campus. The staff at ITS are very committed and competent. I have already experienced this in practice several times in the first few weeks. I am therefore very much looking forward to continuing to work with them.

What do you see as the biggest challenge in ITS?

Providing IT for a university is a fundamental challenge due to the wide range of requirements. As a result of the digital transformation, we are experiencing significant growth in demand for new IT services. These are often comparatively complex, for example because cloud solutions and local IT need to work together or certain security requirements need to be met. We are therefore seeing quantitative and qualitative growth in IT services. This is of course a considerable challenge in operational, financial and especially personnel terms.

What should not be missing from your desk?

I actually try to keep my desk as clear as possible - which works better for me with the real desk than with the desktop on my laptop. But I do like to h

Thank you for your time and the opportunity to get to know you a little better at the beginning. We wish you a successful and hopefully long-lasting time at ITS.

Constantly growing threats:

Focus on information security at the University of Bayreuth

Annual surveillance audits are required as part of the ISO 27001 certification of the ITS. The auditors from TÜV Süd independently review the information security management system (ISMS).

The ITS passed the surveillance audit again in mid-January. The auditors confirmed that the ISMS is functioning very well.

The new Head of ITS, Dr Hans-Jörg Bauer, is delighted with this success: "At my debut, we have mastered a major task well and shown that we are facing up to the constantly growing challenges of information security every day. This is particularly necessary due to the constantly growing global threats, which do not stop at the University of Bayreuth, as can be seen almost daily in all the media."

Information Security Officer Ralf Stöber emphasises: "Thanks to ISO 27001 certification in 2020 and its continuous maintenance through annual audits, we have established a high level of security from which all members of the university can benefit. On this basis, however, it is necessary for everyone involved to actively contribute to information security.

Apollo mission successfully completed

The Mission Apollo project was launched at ITS in the middle of last year. Behind the exciting title lies a new backup system that has replaced the previous system, which is now 7 years old.

After an intensive planning, implementation and test phase, the new backup system is now running on the basis of a multi-level backup concept and is distributed across various locations for security reasons. Any necessary restoration of data is significantly faster with the new system. The backed-up data is kept immutable for a certain period of time and thus offers protection against ransomware attacks - a type of malware attack.

Chair and faculty servers outside the ITS can be backed up for a fee if required. Tom Rüger is your contact person for backups.

Exciting worlds of AI image generation

For our article on the installation of the backup server - Mission Apollo - we experimented a little with free AI image generators.
Our quest for the optimal result for the assignment "Create an image around the backup server and Mission Apollo" led us to Bing Copilot Designer from Microsoft (see image AI1 above). Equally impressive was Adobe's Firefly (image AI2 - Firefly), another star in the AI creation firmament.

Our experiments with Night Café (KI3 Night Café) and Lexica (KI4 - Lexica) undoubtedly produced impressive images. However, we felt that they were not in perfect harmony with our original brief. For an in-depth

insight into the world of free AI image generators, we recommend taking a look at the informative article from Heise: https://www.heise-regioconcept.de/online-marketing/ki-bilder-erstellen.
